A Micronesia Kingfisher has successfully hatched at the New Mexico Zoo!
This brings up the population to 151 birds, which is a lot if you think that species was nearly wiped out back in the 1980's.
From talks with some of the biologists, breeding the Micronesian kingfishers is a quite a challenge, every bird counts. But it has proven that even though it is a challenge, it is successful!
Let us hope that the sooner we have more birds, the sooner we work together with the Guam community, the sooner these birds can return to their rightful tåno' yan långet (land and sky), Guam.
With 151 birds in captivity, we are halfway of the ko'ko' (Guam rail) population which is at about 300 birds!
